Obesity Surgery Becomes Option for More People

It is a fact that one of the biggest problems that are faced by a lot of people nowadays is obesity. Because of the food that we eat, the lifestyle we choose to live, and because of the lack of sufficient information, most people are led to believe that what they do does not affect their health. And due to the growing cases of obesity all over the world, and because some cases of obesity are so severe that no exercise or medicine is enough to get rid of all of the stored fats, experts have come up with a solution called weight loss surgery.

Weight loss surgery has been the last resort of people who are extremely obese from the time it was introduced in the field of medicine up to the present. But there are some qualifications that need to be satisfied by the patient before he is accepted for surgery. First, they should have gone an extensive exercise and diet program for weight loss. And if they have failed, they will be weighed and should have BMI (body mass index) of 40 and up to qualify for the procedure. Doctors will also accept those who have a BMI of 35, provided that they have a serious health predicament which is associated with obesity like high blood pressure or obesity.

But because of the growing number of obesity cases which are caused by newly introduced substances present in the food that we eat, medical experts are finding it harder and harder to control the situation. This is why a pharmaceutical company called Allergan has proposed to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to lower their qualifications for people who are obese in order for them to be able to undergo weight loss surgery called the lap-band system. The company has proposed that the qualifications be lowered for obese people with no health problems from a BMI of 40 to 35, while those qualifications of people with obesity associated health concerns are lowered from a BMI of 35 to 30.

Based on statistics, it is reported that almost 20% of adults have BMIs ranging from 30 and 35, which is more than twice of those who have BMIs of over 35. And of that 20%, half of them have health problems associated with obesity. Experts agree that surgery is the only method where a lot of obese people can lose weight. These experts also stated that their lives can also be lengthened when they undergo weight loss surgery.

The new method called lap-band surgery is highly recommended compared to the gastric bypass surgery because it is cheaper and it can be reversed, but you can only lose up to 20% of your total weight with lap-banding which is lesser than gastric bypass. But even if this is the case, once this appeal of Allergan has been approved by the FDA, the statistics alone will tell you that the number of people who will depend on weight loss surgery would dramatically increase.
