The Basics on Stocking a Healthy Kitchen

Preparing meals for your family is an enjoyable task that needs a lot of planning especially that your kids will need to have nutritious and healthy foods to eat to keep them away from diseases and sickness. Most of the time moms are tasked with meal planning at the start of the week to list the ingredients needed to make everyday meals. Here are some basic tips on what to stock on your kitchen for easy to make recipes available any time.

  • Stock on food staples – Buying ingredients in bulk that we commonly use in cooking will save us time and money. Not only will you need to go out to the market every time you need these ingredients but having them handy will make the preparation time cut in half. Buy onions, garlic, tomatoes, oil, ginger and spices and store them in baskets. You can also cut costs when you buy these ingredients in bulk.
  • Must haves on your kitchen shelf – For easy preparation of snacks and quick bites for little ones who needs energy to fuel their play times you have to buy easy to cook ingredients like pasta, pancake mixes, pasta sauce flour, sugar and peanut butter. Buy biscuits and bread with assorted jams for filling instead of junk foods for your kids. You need to keep in mind that a healthy snack prepared at home can train your kids to eat healthy even when they’re outside.
  • Stock Up on fresh fruits – fruits and vegetables can be stored in the refrigerator for days. This will enable you to prepare meals that have good nutritional value when mixed with vegetables and fresh meat. As much as possible avoid processed meats like hotdogs, hams and other preserved meats. They are not as fresh and may have high sodium content as preservatives. It is also good to store cheese, milk and other dairy products in your refrigerator for later use. Milk and other dairy products are a good source of calcium for growing kids and for the whole family.
  • Keep Meat frozen – for meats to stay fresh and last for a long time you need to put them in the coldest part of your refrigerator which is your freezer. Try to cook the meat within days after it is purchased to avoid spoilage and growth of microorganisms. Meats, poultry and fish should be kept in individual containers so their juices will not mix with each other.
  • Organic ingredients – Although most people like the thought of going organic because of its health benefits of having more vitamins and nutrients there are still families who are not aware of the advantages of organic food. Some just can’t afford it because it is priced slightly higher than normal produce. If your budget permits stock on organic fruits and vegetables that are in season to save up. Organic foods are better because they don’t contain harmful substances like pesticides, chemicals and antibiotics when they are grown thus the nutrients remain natural, intact and potent.

Stocking on healthy food in your pantry will keep your children reaching for a healthy lifestyle. Making these items easily available and within reach will encourage quick, healthy and tasty meal preparations.

What is the Real Deal between Stress and Nutrition

Stress is part of life even an essential part in our life as long as it only takes place every now and then. But chronic stress can wear out an individual and can lead to harmful effects towards health and overall well being. Stress is the body’s physiologic response to change. Either a person will overcome stress or be overcome with it. Sometimes stress can affect our health by the way we eat. Our body’s reaction to stress varies and sometimes it can lead to unhealthy eating and sleepless nights.

Here are some of the unhealthy activities that we do in response to experiencing stress in our daily lives.

  • We take too much caffeine or energy boosters. To sustain the drive and energy for work or any activity that we need to finish within a deadline we force our body to stay awake and energize for prolonged hours by drinking coffee or energy drinks. The aftermath of this regular intake of caffeine will haunt us back after a period of time. The body will get tired and eventually fall apart as the immune system weakens. It is alright to drink coffee to give you that energy boost but you have to rest afterwards and refrain from making drinking coffee a regular habit to avoid your system always on a high, give it a rest to recover and get back in shape.
  • Many of us are guilty of eating out our stress levels. Most of us are unaware that every time we feel pressured or tensed we tend to overeat. We are caught in thinking that our minds work all the time and it needs food for fuel. Yes indeed the mind is working when we are stressed but the body is not physically active so if we overeat which we normally do when we are tired and weary mentally, we don’t burn the calories we take in which can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and other health risks.
  • With the fast paced environment we are in we are likely to be in a rush all the time. This results to skipping meals or eating while on the go The food does not get absorbed fully and most of the time the food available to eat while running around is unhealthy and lacks nutrition that can properly fuel your body for the day’s activities.
  • When we are stressed with work and seems like there is an endless list of tasks and errand to do we forget to hydrate and drink water. Neglecting to nourish the cells with water leaves it dehydrated and causes dizziness, weakness and fatigue which further more adds to the great deal of stress we endure.

How can we combat stress with adequate nutrition?

We need to be disciplined in ensuring that we eat at the right time and consume healthy portions of food with high quality to help strengthen the body to fight stress.

  • Eat a balanced meal. The importance of a balanced meal cannot be emphasized more as our body needs to work longer hours we need to fuel it with the essential nutrients that can give it the energy to finish all tasks and sustain a whole day’s work.
  • Don’t skip meals. Especially breakfast in the morning as it is regarded as the most important meal of the day. Maintaining a stable blood sugar after a whole night of no food intake will greatly affect your mind’s ability to concentrate and your body’s response to physical activities.
  • Munch on healthy snacks. Throughout the day you need to eat snacks to re-fuel your body to produce the needed energy to go on working. Snacking on unhealthy foods like most fast food chains serve will just make you sleepy from the high sugar content and will cause health risks in the long run because of its high fat content. Better munch of healthy alternatives like fruits, yogurt, wheat bread and nuts.
