Proven and Effective Ways to a Healthy Colon

People who are health conscious always watches out for one organ, especially when they reach the point that they feel that they are getting old, and this is their hearts. If you are one of those people who are very careful about the activities that you do in life to protect your heart, you should bear in mind that there is one part of the body that needs extra care as important as your heart does – your colon.

The colon is one of the most important parts of the human digestive system. One of its main functions is the removal of toxins and waste material inside our body due to certain activities which bring in the chemicals in our system like unhealthy eating habits, pollution, cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol intake. The colon is also responsible for making sure that the body has enough fluids. All of these functions are accomplished by our colon by getting huge amounts of electrolytes and water from the food that we eat.

When our colon is not taken cared of, it malfunctions like any other organ. Once this happens, instead of absorbing electrolytes and water, it ends up absorbing the toxins that are stored inside our bodies. This malfunction of the colon is called auto-intoxication. When the body suffers intoxication due to the malfunctioning colon, it could lead to certain chronic disorders including arthritis, asthma, constipation, heart disease and even cancer.

This is why it is also important to take good care of our colon like we do with our heart and other important organs in our body. This can be done by following these proven and effective ways to keep our colon healthy:

  1. Drink lots and lots of water everyday. This is one of the oldest health advices that you have ever heard, and still is recommended today. This is because it works wonders. When a person drinks the recommended amount of water everyday, it helps the digestive system by making the fiber that we absorb swell as it runs inside the digestive system. The contractions inside the body, described as a wave-like sensation is called peristalsis is one thing that drinking plenty of water improves. This process is responsible for regulating the bowel movements inside the body, preventing excessive toxin buildup. On the other hand, if the supply of water inside the body is inadequate, it leads to the storage of toxins and even constipation. Also, it might lead to colon malfunction.
  2. Beef up your regular fiber intake. To increase your body’s daily fiber intake, you should add more grains, fruits and vegetables to your diet. It is a known fact that eating foods rich in fiber could help a lot in making digestion easy. The fiber is very much the same as a broom which cleans the body by sweeping out the toxins stored in the digestive system. Fiber also helps by combining the toxins inside the body with fats so that they are both flushed out effectively.
  3. Eat the right kind of food. In order to prevent toxin buildup inside the body, you should also be careful with the food that you eat. Stay away from foods which contain a lot of preservatives and food enhancers.

Different Approaches to Colon Cleansing

Colon cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases which kill almost 700,000 people yearly. In fact it ranks third in the cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The cancer is caused by sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, alcohol intake, smoking, and poor bowel patterns. Those who have family members diagnosed to have cancer are also at risk for having cancer of the colon.

Just like any other disease conditions, the best weapon we can have in fighting diseases is prevention. Preventing the disease from happening rather than fighting the disease when it hits you is the best way to get rid of the disease like colon cancer.

One of the best ways in preventing the occurrence of colon cancer is by performing colon cleansing. Colon cleansing is done to get rid of the stools, toxins, and other substances that may be thriving on the intestinal tract that can possibly be the cause of diseases. The following are the different approaches to colon cleansing:

  • Colon Cleansing Diet

This is the best way to help get rid of the unwanted toxins and stool in the colon. This is so because it is done naturally and does not involve the use of medications. Colon cleansing diet involves eating foods rich in dietary fiber like fruits and vegetables. The diet also involves increasing water intake to help in the easier passage of hardened stools. This is much preferred colon cleansing approach because it does not pose any side effects that can harm the health of the person undergoing colon cleanse.

  • Colonic Hydrotherapy

The process involves in inserting a tube and syringe into the rectum that is filled with water and minerals. After a few minutes, the inserted fluid is removed to get stool and other waste material in the body. The process is repeated until the colon is already clean. However, before performing this procedure the doctor should have an approval because it can cause harm to people who have congestive heart failure and can lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance.

  • Enema

Enema is a colon cleansing procedure that entails the introduction of water and other liquids to the anus. This is done to get rid of the body wastes that are present on the intestinal tract. Usually enemas are used by people who are suffering from constipation.

  • Laxatives

This is the most common medication used to treat constipation and for colon cleansing. Laxatives are in forms of teas, pills, and other beverages. It helps initiate feeling of urgency after hours of taking the laxative. Using the laxative automatically gets rid of the waste materials in the body. Although it is not advised to take laxatives most of the time as it can lead to rebound constipation later on.

Eating Healthy for Colon Cancer Prevention

Colon cancer affects the large intestines which is the lower part of the digestive system. Colon cancer is the most common type of cancer today. It develops from small benign (non-cancerous) adenomatous polyps into larger clumps that eventually become cancer. As with most types of cancer its cause is unknown and can affect both men and women.

Who are the people at risk for colon cancer?

  • Individuals suffering from Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) are at high risk of developing colon cancer.
  • Age above 50 is likely to have colon cancer but young people can get affected too.
  • Recent studies and research shows that high caloric diet and those low in fiber can be predisposed into developing colon cancer.
  • Obesity
  • Presence of polyps in the colon. Polyps are outgrowths in the wall of the intestines and in the rectum.
  • Family history of colon cancer or medical history of cancer.

Some people belonging to the high risk group may not get the disease while others who are at a low risk may get cancer. As doctors say it, cancer is unpredictable it can hit anyone surprisingly which is why doctors and health practitioners are advocating adaptation of a healthy lifestyle and regular medical check ups to lessen the risk of having the disease.

Colon cancer can be treated if detected early and furthermore it can be prevented. Screening for colon cancer can dramatically change the prognosis of the disease. Doctors screen for benign polyps forming on the wall of the intestines. These polyps can later on develop into cancer. Colon cancer screening may include the following procedures.

  • Fecal test for occult bleeding
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Barium enema
  • Colonoscopy
  • Stool DNA

People who are at high risk for colon cancer like those who belong to the African American descent, advanced age over 45 and who experiences Inflammatory bowel disease should be screened for colon cancer every 2 to 5 years. Maintaining a healthy diet helps in preventing colon cancer. Research suggests that a diet rich in fiber and nutrients can help in preventing the formation of polyps. Certain lifestyle changes can reduce the risk for colon cancer.

  • Avoid smoking – smoking increases chances of getting colon cancer by 12 percent. Inhaled tobacco smoke brings carcinogen into the body and increase tobacco use is said to increase size of polyps.
  • Limit meat consumption and foods that are high in fat – diet low in fiber such as meat and high fat foods will not facilitate healthy bowel movement and can contribute to formation of polyps in the intestinal wall.
  • Lessen drinking alcohol
  • Exercise regularly – to facilitate movement of wastes that includes harmful toxins outside of the body.
  • Maintain a healthy weight – research show that obese individuals are at a high risk for developing colon cancers.
  • Avoid radiation exposure – The US Department of Health has linked colon cancer to radiation exposure of 1,000 millisieverts (mSv). Radiation exposure of around 200 millisieverts can cause thyroid cancer, leukemia, and breast cancers while less than 100 millisieverts can cause liver cancer.
