Exercise Induced Asthma: What to do

Asthma is a chronic condition wherein our airways get inflamed which causes difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and coughing plus chest tightness. The onset of the disease is unpredictable and up to now its etiology remains unknown though there are many contributing factors that lead to its development. These factors are:

  1. Allergies – ranging from pollens, pollution, cat fur, dust mites and other fumes that triggers an  allergic reaction causing the airways to constrict are some of the most known causes of asthma especially in children
  2. Tobacco smoke – smoking has been a common cause for various respiratory problems which includes asthma. Recent statistics shows that children and adolescents who receive second hand smoke or called passive smokers are at a higher risk of developing asthma.
  3. Environmental factors – most of the allergic reactions are brought by the vast pollution in the environment. Proliferation of chemical plants that emits harmful smoke that pollutes the air contributes to the increasing incidence of asthma attacks. Household cleaners, paints and fumes used in homes can also trigger an asthma attack.
  4. Obesity – overweight individuals are prone to asthma as symptoms may be aggravated by the excess weight which may cause further difficulty in breathing.

Another type of asthma that affects mostly children is called Exercise Induced Asthma. How is it different from the typical asthma and is it preventable? These are just one of the many questions of concerned parents of children who are prone to exercise induced asthma.

For some people, engaging in exercise can trigger an asthma attack. Just like any external factors that trigger asthma like environment change, drop in temperature and physical exertion can predispose an individual to experience asthma.

Normally when we breathe we take in air through our nose which causes the air to become humid and warm when it reaches the lungs however when we are doing physical activities such as exercising we tend to take in air through the mount resulting in drying of the airways because of the cold air that passes through. This dryness can irritate the airways which cause inflammation and constriction making it harder to breathe. The sudden change in temperature can cause an attack. When asthma is triggered the airways swell and there is an increased production of mucus making it harder to breathe.

Asthma doesn’t have a cure but it can be managed. Many people use inhalers that contain bronchodilators, medication that opens up the airways to facilitate passage of air. Some may need to take long term medications to treat severe asthma. These medications include corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, theophylline. However treatment for exercise induced asthma usually doesn’t require long term medications for the trigger is already identified and the most probable cure would be to avoid the trigger.

Treatment for exercise induced asthma is geared towards prevention and managing the symptoms. Here are some tips on how to manage the disease.

  • Before starting any physical activity make sure to do warm up exercises around 15 to 20 minutes
  • Avoid exercising in cold environments, it is better to do physical activities in a humid environment
  • Avoid breathing through your mouth
  • Don’t be afraid to join in physical activities, just be reminded of your limits
