Natural Treatment for Arthritis

Many people who suffer from arthritis needs pain relievers for painful joints that can keep them awake at night. But not all people can take pain relievers for a lifetime and relying on these medications are also dangerous to the body which is why many people who have arthritis are looking for ways on how to manager their disease in a natural way.

Arthritis is classified as damage to joints in the body. It has many types and the most common types are osteoarthritis which is a degenerative disease or a disease for the elderly, rheumatoid arthritis, and septic arthritis. Whatever type of arthritis you may have it all has the number one symptom which is joint pain. The pain from inflamed joints can be excruciating and debilitating for some. It increases in intensity in cold months and in winter. It can also worsen as a person increase in age.

Before reaching out for that pain reliever in your cupboard every time you feel that joint pain throbbing, why don’t you try these natural treatments that can alleviate the pain brought by arthritis first.

  • Use of moist heat in relieving joint pains. Moist heat pads are available in the market that be heated in a microwave for soothing relief over painful joints. Make sure that the temperature is not too hot to avoid burns.
  • Massage treatment for joint pains. Except for extreme pain gentle stroking massage brings relief over inflamed joints.
  • Heat and or cold treatments. Cool compress lowers swelling and inflammation in joints therefore it is good to apply cold compress over the joints when arthritis attacks. Heat compress on the other hand relaxes the surrounding muscles and promotes blood flow. Some doctors advise alternating cold and heat compresses every after 15 minutes to provide relief of pain.
  • Magnet therapy. There are various studies showing positive results in the use of magnets in treating rheumatoid arthritis. It can be in a form of bracelet, pads, disks or necklaces. Although this alternative treatment has no scientific basis or further research has yet to be done to confirm effectiveness.
  • Relaxation techniques. Perhaps the most helpful natural treatment in pain management for arthritis. Deep abdominal breathing can relax the mind and muscles which can lessen the perception of pain. Meditation and visualization also helps to alter perception of pain.

Regular exercise and a healthy diet still is the primary preventive treatment for arthritis. Even though exercise may not be possible at the time of painful joint attacks it will still help if a person suffering from arthritis will make it a habit to walk on days where joints are not inflamed. Doing so will avoid stiffening of the joint muscles and will lessen the friction in between the joints. A healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits are helpful to keep the muscles and joints in their optimum state. Avoid being overweight as this will further add pressure to the painful inflamed joints.
