Foods Containing Lactose

Milk is one of the most widely used ingredients in food, and is present in foods you wouldn't even imagine. Whilst this isn't a big problem for most people, for those who are severely lactose intolerant, you can find yourself really running the gauntlet when it comes to purchasing food. As any person who suffers severely from lactose intolerance will tell you, the symptoms and effects are really best avoided. In this article we hope to raise awareness of foods containing lactose and give you some pointers on how you can avoid them.

Some of the most common foods containing lactose are:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Ice Cream
  • Cream
  • Instant Mash Potato
  • Salad Cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Biscuits
  • Chocolate
  • Boiled Sweets
  • Sponge Cake (Especially cake containing cream filling).
  • Peanut Butter
  • Pharmaceutical Pills (Yes, even some of these contain lactose).

The list really does go on and on, and the chances are almost each constituent of your present diet contains some lactose. So, what to do?

There really is only one answer to this question, and that is try to eliminate as much lactose from you diet as you can by carefully checking the labels of your foods before purchasing, and avoid foods which state ‘lactose content' or ‘milk content'.

Many food manufacturers have products on the shelf which state ‘lactose free' or ‘reduced lactose', and many of these products are true to their word. Some products on the market however are fragrantly misleading customers into believing they are purchasing a product which is almost lactose free by clever advertising, as ‘reduced lactose' really tells nothing of how much lactose content there really is. This can leave you paying far more for a product which really contains barely decreased lactose levels compared to regular produce.

In the end it may come down to some trial and error. Write down what you purchased, what you consumed and the symptoms you felt. That way you can work out which products are the best and which aren't so good.
