What Are Genital Warts?

One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, genital warts are caused by the virus known as human papilloma virus, or HPV. There are a variety of ways this disease can crop up, although many people do not exhibit any symptoms at all. For example, genital warts can appear as flesh colored bumps in the beginning stages and later look like cauliflower shaped patches in and around the genital area. The size of genital warts can also vary from small, single bumps across the genital region or appear in larger patches. If you think you've been exposed to genital warts, it's important to seek medical attention as soon as possible for treatment.

Genital warts usually appear in various places on both women and men, including in and around the vaginal canal, the area between the genitals and the anus and around the male genitalia. Additionally, coming in oral contact with a person affected with genital warts can cause the disease to crop up in the mouth and throat. Despite the fact that genital warts are common and treatable, early detection is best to treat and prevent future breakouts from happening. Unfortunately however, there's no cure for the virus and even with treatment you may still be able to infect someone with genital warts.
