A Little About Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric Bypass Surgery is a bit like lap band surgery in that it is a type of restrictive surgery. However, there are also major differences associated with these types of surgeries. Gastric Bypass surgery is a type of surgery where a pouch is created in the stomach with staples, but a bypass valve is made that will bypass a portion of the small intestines.
Gastric Bypass surgery can be more invasive than lap band surgery if it is an open surgery. When you talk to your surgeon, you should ask him about the different types of gastric bypass surgery and which would be better for you the open surgery or the lap band type.
Now, comes the big difference in the two types of restrictive weight loss surgery. With this type, a portion of the small intestine is bypassed whereas with the lap band nothing is bypassed. When you bypass part of the small intestines, the body cannot effectively digest your food completely. Your body will however, absorb fewer fats and calories. The thought behind this type of surgery is to limit the amount of nutrients that your body absorbs. However, you are also limiting the amount of nutrients and vitamins your body is absorbing as well.
When you have gastric bypass surgery, your doctor will more than likely put you on nutritional supplements to aid in giving your body back the nutrients that are no longer being absorbed that your body needs such as iron and calcium.
Remember Gastric bypass surgery is not a cure all for a lifetime of overeating; you must make a commitment to maintain the proper weight by eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis.
