Gastric Bypass Information

Right after gastric bypass surgery, you will more than likely be on a type of pain medication for around 3 days before you begin to feel like getting up and moving around. You will then be ready to leave the hospital. At this time, your surgeon will give you gastric bypass information that will discuss exactly what you should do, what you should eat and when to have your follow up exam.

With the gastric bypass information that you take home, you will find information like the following:

•  Stay on a liquid diet then move up to a pureed food diet

•  Six weeks after surgery you should be able to eat a small meal

•  Your diet should include mainly meats and you should eat only three meals per day

•  It should take around 30 minutes to one hour for you to totally consume your meal.

•  Eat slowly and chew properly

•  Do not drink liquids with your meal, this will cause you to fill up and not have room for the food and can cause a pressure feeling in the chest which may have you vomiting up your food

•  Between meals, you should drink around 5 to 6 glasses of non-carbonated drinks such as tea, coffee and water.

•  Exercise, in the beginning when the doctor agrees you should start with walking

•  No sitting or standing for long periods of time

•  Light housekeeping is okay

•  Driving your car should wait until one week after surgery

•  If your employment is considered to light, then you can return normally within two weeks

•  Sexual activity can resume after one week

Remember these are just guidelines with gastric bypass information; you should speak with your surgeon and physician before any type of activities after gastric bypass surgery.
