Gastric Bypass Diet Guidelines
Here is a simple guideline to show you want you should eat week by week on your gastric bypass diet.
Week 1:
Clear liquid gastric diet: sips of water, diet gelatin, clear broth, bouillon, sugar free juice diluted with water, and flat diet sodas.
During this week, you should only consume clear liquids as stated above. The amount of clear liquids you should drink is around 2 ounces every 15 minutes, which is 8 ounces per hour.
Week 2:
Semi liquid or full liquid gastric diet: high protein liquids like Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast, thick liquids similar to cream of wheat, and low sugar drinks. During this week, you should also begin to supplement with your diet with a multi-vitamin that is chewable such as children's vitamins. You should stick to drinking 2 ounces every 15 minutes or be sure that you consume 8 ounces each hour.
Weeks 3 to 6:
Pureed gastric diet Foods: foods put in the blender such as lean meats, chicken, pork, or tuna, cottage cheese, casseroles also put in the blender, vegetables put in the blender. Strained baby food is also allowed. During these weeks, be sure to chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly. Also, remember to take your multi-vitamins that are chewable and to drink plenty of water but not during meals. A protein supplement between meals is also important.
Weeks 6 to 8:
Regular gastric diet: Now you should begin to slowly introduce solid food to your body. Do not however try several different items on the same day, or body must adjust to eating normal foods again. You should consume 1,000 calories per day and remember to eat foods from all the food groups' especially high protein foods. You should still only drink liquids between meals and not during, you do not want to fill up on liquids. |
