This is the very first stage of your new gastric bypass diet. You will only be allowed to consume clear liquids. This means liquids that you can just about see through. This stage lasts about one to two days. You first start with small sips of water and work your way up to sugar free juices, clear broth and even diet soda if you allow it to become flat before drinking. No carbonated drinks are allowed.

Low Fat Full Liquids

As soon as your body can tolerate the liquid stage without any problems, you can advance to this stage. During this stage, you will be allowed to drink such things like diet Carnation Instant Breakfast and other high protein liquids. This stage is what you are normally on when you leave the hospital. You will be at this stage for around 1 to 2 weeks. Some patients do begin to take chewable multi-vitamins and mineral supplements.

Pureed Gastric Bypass Diet

Now you will be able to enjoy some flavorful foods. You will be allowed to have soft high protein foods such as low fat cheese, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, or even blended lean meats like chicken, pork, or tuna. Some patients prefer to have baby food at this stage. Normally this stage begins after two weeks from leaving the hospital.

Regular Food

Finally, after about 8 weeks, you can return to regular food, but you still must stick to a gastric bypass diet. You will enjoy eating foods from all five food groups but remember to always eat high protein foods at every meal. You should eat smaller portions and talk with your doctor or dietitian to ensure you are eating properly.
