Gastric Bypass Diet Information

The purpose of gastric bypass surgery is to reduce the size of your stomach and to bypass a portion of the small intestines. This is the reason you must be on a gastric bypass diet. Your stomach will no longer be the same size and you will not be able to eat as much food at one sitting. In the beginning, you will only be able to consume about one ounce of liquids. As the pouch stretches, you will be able to eat around 4 to 8 ounces of food. The opening that attaches the stomach to the small intestines is very small and will not allow as much food to enter, this way you feel full longer.

Gastric Bypass Information

Your gastric bypass diet will probably not give you as much nutrients as your body needs since the surgery will bypass a portion of your small intestines. Your body will not be able to absorb some of the nutrients and fats that it once did. Because of this, many surgeons will give you a prescription for vitamins and mineral supplements or will give you advice on which ones you should add to your diet.

Along with the recommended gastric diet, your physician and surgeon suggested you should take one adult or two children's multivitamins on a daily basis. You should also take extra iron, calcium and vitamin B 12 if the surgeon believes you need more of these.

Staying in close contact with your physician concerning your gastric bypass diet will ensure that once you have lost the weight it will stay off, your body will still be receiving all the vitamins, and minerals it needs to keep you healthy.
