Dry Skin on the Penis

Dry skin on penis may not be down to regular dryness of the skin as in perhaps the face or hands, and may be down to an STD. Due to the nature of STD's, it is very important you see your G.P. for a diagnosis before simply assuming the reasons for your dry skin are relatively harmless. Aside from STD's, there are other causes of dry skin on the penis.

Other very common causes of dry skin on penis are:

  • Masturbation the more the penis is exposed to the air, the drier it becomes. Excessive masturbation practices can cause dry skin on penis.
  • Circumcision: Many people or cultures circumcise in the mistaken belief it is unclean to have a foreskin. This is of course nonsense. The foreskin is there for a reason, and that is to protect the penis against germs and to keep it moist. People whom have been circumcised are inevitably much more prone to developing dry skin on the penis, as the penis head is constantly exposed and also in contact with fabrics which may in turn have detergents in them which make matters worse. People whom have been circumcised will need to take greater care in ensuring their penis has been moisturised regularly to prevent drying.
  • Washing with soap: Washing your penis with soap and hot water is a particularly bad combination as this washes the protective oils (sebum) from the penis and dries the skin. It is recommended in future you wash your penis without the use of soap, and with lukewarm water, and apply a little moisturiser around the head of your penis after drying.
