Diabetes and Herbs

Herbs and natural remedies and medications can often have the unfair reputation of been useless, ineffective and sold by people who seek only to profit from placebo-like ‘weeds'. Whilst this may be true of some so-called herbal remedies, it is by no means true of all alternative medications.

In Eastern cultures particularly, many different types of herbs have been used for thousands of years as cures for various illnesses. To dismiss such a long legacy of medical practice from any culture as simply wrong is not only arrogant, but could be a wrong assumption in itself.

In recent years, many people of Western cultures – including medical experts – have opened their minds and begun to explore the benefits to be reaped from Eastern therapies, among them herbs.

There are literally thousands of herbs, all of which are said to perform some function or other. Some herbs are touted as wonder drugs to all ailments, whilst the claims of many herbs are more modest. In a world of misinformation it can be a daunting task to move into a totally new realm where every product is claiming to be the answer to all of your health problems.

Scientists have however acknowledged many traditional eastern herbs do in fact possess qualities which can have an application alongside Western treatment methods for various illnesses.

One such illness scientists have looked into is diabetes and herbs which may be of use in treating diabetes. As there are different types of diabetes, and each individual suffers from diabetes in a slightly different way, finding herbs which help control diabetes can be more of a personal issue than one which can be recommended. As there are no wonder drugs in the world which cure or control diabetes all on their own, there are no herbs which will do this.

No decisive advice can be given on which herbs you should try; this is purely a personal choice. There is absolutely no substitute for a solid, healthy diet and good exercise in controlling diabetes. You may however, find herbs which are said to control sugar levels a helpful addition to your diet. If you do decide on taking herbs, you should first consult with your G.P., and secondly, do as much research as you can on your chosen herb to help you make an informed decision. You should consider such aspects as dosage, and would the recommended dosage have much of an effect, and also any possible side effects.
