Understanding Bariatric Surgery
There are three major types or really three categories of Bariatric Surgery which are restrictive procedures, malabsorptive techniques, and a combination of malabsorptive and restriction.
Restrictive surgery is the one in which they use a type of band to place around your stomach creating a pouch in the upper part to limit the amount of food you can consume. Malabsorptive techniques will reduce the amount of intestines for the food to come in contact with so your body will absorb fewer calories. The combination surgery uses both methods and is not used very often.
The way in which Bariatric surgery works when you have restrictive surgery is that your stomach will shrink, not literally but you will have a smaller pouch that will work as your stomach. The pouch will only hold around 1 ounce of food after the surgery but will stretch to hold around 3 ounces of food. This way you will feel full faster and not have the need to keep eating. The food will be released into the bottom portion of your stomach at a very slow speed so you will feel full for a longer period of time.
Malabsorption techniques are when a bypass is created to pass over the duodenum and a few other parts of your small intestine. This way the food will not be absorbed into your body as fast or even not at all.
Then there are the procedures that use both of these. You will have a pouch in your upper stomach causing you to feel full and the bypass that will aid in not allowing your body to absorb at many calories.
