Not everyone that is overweight is a good candidate for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The American Society of Bariatric Surgery has a list of requirements must be met before Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery can be considered.
A person must have a total body mass index of above 40, or if other health problems are present between 30 or 40 body mass index. Some of the other health problems can include high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and arthritis that is extremely painful and can be shown with an x-ray. The age limit is 18 to 55 years of age.

You must be obese and have been for at least 5 years
No history of alcohol abuse
No history of drug abuse
You have not been treated for depression
You have never been treated for any major psychiatric disorder
You must have exhausted all other methods of weight loss without success such as medication and exercise
You must not have any type of glandular disease
